Position: Veterinary Surgical Aide for OAR’s Spay/Neuter Clinic
The Veterinary Aide is primarily responsible for keeping the flow of surgery going by maintaining equipment and supplies. This includes making sterilized pack wraps; cleaning surgical instruments; doing laundry; cleaning traps and carriers; and maintaining cleanliness in the surgical area (cleaning kennels, mopping, etc.). Physical requirements typically include regular bending and stretching for cleaning duties (vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, cleaning kennels). Position requires Veterinary Aide to stand for most of the day.
Position is Tuesday to Friday 8am-2pm* with possible extra hours as requested. Hourly employee. Reports to Surgery Lead and Executive Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a clean and sterile environment, including cleaning cages, floors, surgery suite, prep areas, and equipment; doing laundry; making pack wraps.
  • Any other task or duty as assigned or required.

  • Must be a competent multi-tasker.
No previous veterinary experience or schooling required; job will include training.
Hourly wage range: $9.50 - $10.50/hourly
*possible opportunity for added hours on certain scheduled days.

REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

OAR is currently seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to work a flexible schedule in our Wellness Assessment Center (WAC), spay/neuter clinic, and adoption center as needed. This position will entail assisting with medical management of WAC patients; weekly and as-needed shifts on the surgery staff of the spay/neuter clinic; and various tasks on the Adoption Center medical team as needed, for a total of 15-25 hours per week.

Hours and shifts may vary and there is some flexibility, but daytime availability between the hours of 7 and 4 is required. The RVT will be needed for one 8-hour (approximate) clinic surgery shift per week every Tuesday, one to three shifts with the WAC program or Adoption Center on other weekdays, and/or further clinic surgery weekday shifts on an as-needed basis, for a total of 15-20 hours per week.

The RVT will work with cats only, and be able to practice and use a variety of skills learned in the veterinary field. The RVT must be comfortable handling/restraining cats and administering vaccines and other drugs. Familiarity with fractious and/or feral cats is a must. Physical requirements typically include lifting cats in carriers or traps, regular bending and stretching for handling cats and performing cleaning duties, and standing for most of the day.

Duties will vary depending on the area worked in, but may include:

  • Drawing up drugs and vaccines;
  • Maintaining an accurate drug log of controlled substances;
  • Inducing anesthesia in alert cats;
  • Prepping cats for surgery;
  • Monitoring cats while they are under anesthesia, during surgery, and in post-surgical recovery;
  • Medical management of patients in Adoption Center and WAC program;
  • Emergency management including resuscitation, intubation, and catheterization;
  • Aiding program veterinarians with blood draws, surgical procedures, dentals, vaccine and medication administration, etc.;
  • Routine daily care of patients in WAC program;
  • Cleaning and sterilization of kennel and surgical areas; and
  • Other tasks as needed.

Knowledge and skill requirements:

  • Commitment to OAR’s mission and interest in the animal welfare industry necessary.
  • Must have a Registered Veterinary Technician license, and have completed a Veterinary Technician program.
  • Must be skilled at handling cats, preferably with experience in a high-volume situation (veterinary clinic, animal rescue, or shelter).
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment while adhering strictly to established processes.
  • Must be a competent multi-tasker with excellent attention to detail.
