Position: Veterinary Aide/Veterinary Assistant

This position will be a part-time Veterinary Aide (2 days a week), and part-time Veterinary Assistant (2 days a week). The Veterinary Aide is primarily responsible for keeping the flow of surgery going by maintaining equipment and supplies. This includes making sterilized pack wraps; cleaning surgical instruments; doing laundry; cleaning traps and carriers; and maintaining cleanliness in the surgical area (cleaning kennels, mopping, etc.). The Veterinary Assistant prepares cats for surgery, including: monitoring cats’ vital signs; tracking cats’ medical records through the surgical process; feeding and monitoring cats after surgery; maintaining clinic cleanliness; and transferring cats into carriers and kennels. The Veterinary Assistant regularly handles cats, and must be comfortable handling animals as a daily part of their position. Physical requirements typically include lifting cats in carrier or traps; and regular bending and stretching for cleaning duties (vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, cleaning kennels). Position requires Veterinary Aide/Veterinary Assistant to stand for most of the day. Position is Tuesday/Friday 10am-2pm; Wednesday/Thursday 7am-3pm. Non-exempt status. Hourly employee. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:        

  • Restrain and handle alert cats to transfer to cages, weigh cats, and assist vet with exams.
  • Track medical records for each cat to ensure proper medical care is administered.
  • Prepare cats for surgery; monitor vital signs under anesthesia; prepare and sterilize incision site.
  • Assist veterinarian in surgery, tracking that each cat receives proper services and wakes from anesthesia without complications.
  • Communicate with front office staff about medical concerns or additional surgical information.
  • Maintain a clean and sterile environment, including cleaning cages, floors, surgery suite, prep areas, and equipment; doing laundry; making pack wraps.
  • Any other task or duty as assigned or required.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Commitment to OAR's mission and interest in the animal welfare industry necessary.        
  • Must be comfortable handling cats, preferably with experience in a high-volume situation (veterinary clinic, animal rescue, or shelter).
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to communicate well with team members, but work independently as well.
  • Must be process-oriented and skilled at performing repetitive tasks.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be a competent multi-tasker, and able to track information on multiple cats at once.
  • No previous veterinary experience or schooling required; job will include thorough training.

Position: Veterinary Technician

Applicants must be licensed Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). The Veterinary Technician is primarily responsible for the care of cats before, during, and after surgery. This includes preparing anesthetic drugs and vaccines for cats before surgery; administering anesthesia to cats and monitoring cats’ vital signs; monitoring cats after surgery; maintaining clinic cleanliness; and transferring cats into carriers and kennels. The Technician regularly handles cats, and must be comfortable handling animals and administering vaccines and other drugs. Physical requirements typically include lifting cats in carrier or traps; and regular bending and stretching for handling cats and performing cleaning duties. Position requires Technician to stand for most of the day. Position is part-time, Monday-Tuesday, 7am-3pm. Non-exempt status. Hourly employee.   • Assist the veterinarian in surgery, tracking that each cat receives the proper services and awakes from anesthesia without complications.
  • Communicate with the front office staff about medical concerns or additional surgical information.
  • Maintain a clean and sterile clinic environment, including cleaning cages, floors, surgery suite, prep area and equipment.
  • Any other task or duty as assigned or required.
